Abstract: Analysis of field data for lower reach of Columbia Glacier indicates that glacier-speed variations in tidal frequency range are dependent on tidal period variations in sea level at terminus and diurnal period variations in melt-water imput at surface. Simple model based on perturbation expansion of flow equation provides framework in which to understand observations. Variations in sea level cause variations in normal stress at terminus and are transmitted up-glacier by longitudinal stress. Variations in melt-water input affect glacier speed, presumably through changes in basal water pressure. Data set does not allow detailed analysis of relation between melt-water input, basal water pressure, and speed.
