Dynamics of ice-island motion near the coast of Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian high Arctic / William M. Sackinger, M.O. Jeffries, H. Tippens, F. Li, M. Lu.

Title: Dynamics of ice-island motion near the coast of Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian high Arctic / William M. Sackinger, M.O. Jeffries, H. Tippens, F. Li, M. Lu.

In: Annals of Glaciology. (1989.), Vol. 12 (1989)
Abstract: Drift of Hobson's Ice Island has been followed almost continuously since August 1983 by means of satellite-tracked buoys. Describes two movement episodes in 1986: on 6 to 16 May and 14 to 21 June. Each episode is analyzed in terms of forces acting on ice island, including wind shear, water drag and shear, Coriolis force, sea-surface tilt, and pack-ice force. Ice-island movement is generally preceded by offshore surface wind and threshold wind speed of 6 m s⁻¹ appears to be necessary to initiate movement. Angle of 50° between surface wind and direction of movement was noted in one episode. Pack-ice force, which appears to be dominant arresting factor of ice-island movement for these two episodes, varies from 100 to 180° to left of direction of velocity, depending upon whether ice island is accelerating or decelerating.
