Record #96609:

Equilibrium state of Jakobshavns Isbrae, West Greenland / M.S. Pelto, Terence J. Hughes, H.H. Brecher.

Title: Equilibrium state of Jakobshavns Isbrae, West Greenland / M.S. Pelto, Terence J. Hughes, H.H. Brecher.
Author(s): Pelto, M. S.
Hughes, Terence J.
Brecher, H. H.
Date: 1989.
Publisher: Cambridge: International Glaciological Society
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1989.), Vol. 12 (1989)
Abstract: Fastest persistent velocity of any known glacier. Measurement of surface velocities at calving front in July 1964, 1976, 1978, 1985, and 1986 yielded mean velocity of 20 m d⁻¹, with year-to-year variation of <1 m d⁻¹. Velocity measurements 10 km behind calving front indicated mean annual velocities of 17.1 m d⁻¹ compared with mid-summer velocities of 17.6 m d⁻¹: maximum possible decline in winter is then 7%. Calculation of volume flux into fjord is 3.72x10¹⁰ m³ a⁻¹±10%. Surface balance is 3.37x10¹⁰ m³\a d⁻¹±12%. Agreement between these balance calculations, long-term stability in glacier velocity, and reasonably stable glacier front indicate that glacier is in state of near equilibrium, with possible small negative balance.
