Development of sea ice in the Weddell Sea / Manfred A. Lange, Stephen F. Ackley, Peter Wadhams, G.S. Dieckmann, H. Eicken.

Title: Development of sea ice in the Weddell Sea / Manfred A. Lange, Stephen F. Ackley, Peter Wadhams, G.S. Dieckmann, H. Eicken.
Author(s): Lange, Manfred A.
Ackley, Stephen F.
Wadhams, Peter.

Date: 1989.
Publisher: Cambridge: International Glaciological Society
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1989.), Vol. 12 (1989)
Abstract: Investigations in central and eastern Weddell Sea as part of Winter Weddell Sea Project 1986, which extended from July to December. Included continuous shipborne observations of sea-ice conditions and occasional helicopter reconnaissances, daily measurements of snow and ice thicknesses, and detailed analyses of sampled ice cores from each ice station. Textural investigations revealed dominance of frazil ice in central area and occurrence of platelet ice, together with frazil and congelation ice, in coastal region. Results show two major mechanisms for sea-ice generation in Antarctic: in central Weddell Sea, cycle of pancake-ice formation and its growth into consolidated floes seems to be dominant process of advancing sea-ice edge. In coastal waters, platelets form in underlying water column in front of ice-shelf edges. Thus, congelation, which is mainly controlled by atmospheric thermodynamic forcing, seems to be of less importance in central and south-eastern Weddell Sea than, for example, in Arctic Basin.
