Sources and movement of icebergs in the south-west Ross Sea, Antarctica / J.R. Keys, Dennis Fowler.
Title: | Sources and movement of icebergs in the south-west Ross Sea, Antarctica / J.R. Keys, Dennis Fowler. |
Author(s): | Keys, J. R. Fowler, Dennis. Keys, Harry. |
Date: | 1989. |
Publisher: | Cambridge: International Glaciological Society |
In: | Annals of Glaciology. (1989.), Vol. 12 (1989) |
Abstract: | Shape, surface features, composition, and thickness of icebergs trapped annually in 200 km long coastal strip of fast ice were examined to determine sources and movement. Thin western ice front of Ross Ice Shelf appears to produce about 40% of these icebergs, while local glaciers supply remainder. Ice-shelf icebergs are carried west towards Ross Island, then north up western side of Ross Sea. Some are trapped by grounding in shallow areas. |
