Calving ice walls / Terence J. Hughes.
Title: | Calving ice walls / Terence J. Hughes. |
Author(s): | Hughes, Terence J. |
Date: | 1989. |
Publisher: | Cambridge: International Glaciological Society |
In: | Annals of Glaciology. (1989.), Vol. 12 (1989) |
Abstract: | Important ablation mechanism in calving bays, but also exist in subpolar glaciers terminating on dry land where they are safer to study. Describes opportunity for detailed field work afforded by 1970 volcanic eruption on Deception Island, Antarctic Peninsula, where thawing of surface layer of ice-cemented ash produced solifluction ramps that made parts of ice wall accessible. Measurements made in melt-water trough and in four tunnels cut into ice wall revealed numerous shear bands that rose almost vertically and curved forward. Shear offset increased upward and was greatest in shear bands that intersected tips of ring-fault crevasses on up-slope side of ice wall. Near base of ice wall, other shear bands, possibly related to slip-line field, intersected ice wall at about 45°. Ice slabs separated by ring faults calved straight down as result of shear rupture along these two sets of bands. Calving dynamics were analyzed and generalized for ice walls grounded in water. |
