Record #96591:

The dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet / William F. Budd, Dick Jenssen.

Title: The dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet / William F. Budd, Dick Jenssen.
Author(s): Budd, William F.
Jenssen, Dick.
Date: 1989.
Publisher: Cambridge: International Glaciological Society
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1989.), Vol. 12 (1989)
Abstract: Three-dimensional dynamic-thermodynamic model has been developed to simulate past, present and future behaviour. Present ice velocities depend on deep ice temperatures, which, in turn, depend on past changes of ice sheet, including surface temperature, accumulation rate, and ice thickness. Basal temperatures also strongly dependent on geothermal heat flux. Model has therefore been used to study effect on basal temperatures of changes to geothermal heat flux, as well as to past changes of surface temperature and accumulation rate based on results obtained from Vostok deep-ice core. Also used to compute distribution of surface velocity required to balance present accumulation rate and dynamics velocity based on stress, temperature, and flow properties of ice, for internal deformation, plus component due to ice sliding. Velocities are compared to observed surface velocities in east Antarctica to assess state of balance and performance of dynamics formulation.
