Record #96589:

Pack-ice drift off east Antarctica and some implications / Ian Allison.

Title: Pack-ice drift off east Antarctica and some implications / Ian Allison.
Author(s): Allison, Ian.
Date: 1989.
Publisher: Cambridge: International Glaciological Society
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1989.), Vol. 12 (1989)
Abstract: Presents ice-drift data, measured by satellite-tracked drifting buoys, for Indian and Pacific sectors of Southern Ocean during 1985 and 1987. As well as providing information on broad-scale drift of ice in Prydz Bay region, data show: (1) important role that ice drift plays in determining autumn and winter expansion of Antarctic sea ice, (2) highly mobile nature of ice, even hundreds of kilometres from ice edge, (3) role that ocean-bottom topography has in determining ice drift over continental shelf, and (4) modifying influence that ice cover has on regional climates. Qualitative assessment is made of relative importance of major forces driving ice, although data are insufficient for detailed study of ice dynamics.
