| Abstract: | In 1630 eight English sailors were stranded on Spitsbergen and found in good health next year, though volunteers could not be found to follow them. Seven bodies were found in 1980, belonging to second Dutch attempt to over-winter at Smeerenburg. Details of J. van der Brugge's journal of first (successful) attempt are discussed. No more attempts were made. |
