| Abstract: | Snow patches may persist for one or two summers above 2000 m in these mountains in Romania, but disappear completely during warm summers. Recent snow-line altitude was determined from climatic data using method developed by Messerli for Mediterranean area: 2900 m. Based on accumulation area ratio of 2:1, glacial equilibrium line altitudes from 1760 to 1900 AD were estimated for three mountain ranges within Carpathians; these ranged from 1650 to 1950 m. Moraines are probably of Würm origin. In Romanian literature, existence of Riss glaciation has been questioned, and older glaciations have been rejected. |
