In: | Problems of the North. ([1988?]), Vol. 21 ([1988?]) |
Abstract: | Urban population grew by 50% between 1966 and 1980. Indigenous population engaged primarily in reindeer husbandry, hunting and fishing, at expense of agricultural development, but supply of machinery has improved greatly in recent years, leading to higher productivity. Stresses importance of stable food-resource base for animals, in context of land reclamation and improvement. Estimates value of commercial reserve of biological resources (wild hoofed animals, pine-forest game birds and partridge, furs, fish, wild berries, etc.). Horses also bred for meat-production purposes. Dicusses cattle, pig and poultry farming (with reference to performance of individual state farms), and grain, feed, and root vegetable crops. Recommends expansion of network of hothouse vegetable farms, privately farmed auxiliary plots, and "back-up" food-resource bases. Distribution of population in smaller settlements would lead to more efficient development of region's natural resources. Translated from Problemy Severa, 1983, Vol.21, p.160-166. |
