Abstract: | Due to severe climatic conditions and economic difficulties associated with transport, agriculture in northern zone will remain support sector in regional economy. Essential nature of agricultural food products makes it advisable to produce them locally, despite relatively high costs. Describes present state of food-production bases in Soviet north, with particular reference to pork production, poultry farming, reindeer-breeding, hothouse production of vegetables, livestock feed base, development of forest-tundra land, cattle-breeding. Discusses work of agricultural research institutes. Three approaches recommended: increase output of existing farms, create network of new, specialized farms, and increase imports from support bases farther south. Translated from Problemy Severa, 1983, Vol.21, p.137-150. |
