In: Problems of the North. ([1988?]), Vol. 21 ([1988?])
Abstract: Deposits of iron ore and coal basins are located along entire length of BAM line: in southern Yakutskaya ASSR, Amurskaya Oblast', and Khabarovskiy Kray. Discusses direct reduction of iron from its ores: plants are relatively expensive to set up (compares data from USA and India) and cleaner, thus helping to protect environment. Growing interest in use of coal as reducing agent; run-of-mine coal will keep down costs of industrial fuel. Climatic conditions make open-pit mining difficult in Siberia and underground mining has been shown to be cost-competitive.
