| Abstract: | Size and diversity of territory dictate a regionally differentiated approach to development. Latitudinally, north can be divided into near north and far north; longitudinally it comprises four regions: European, north Siberian, east Siberian and far eastern. Discusses economic development of each region: oil and gas, timber, hydro-electric power, extraction and processing of non-ferrous metal ores, agriculture, hunting for furs, reindeer-breeding, fishing, transport facilities. Recommends that Soviet north should be set aside as separate zone for planning purposes. Translated from Problemy Severa, 1983, Vol.21, p.20-31. |
