Abstract: Peat deposits more than one m deep have been found in scattered places, the most remarkable occurring on steep ground. Water released by thawing of superficial permafrost layer has here percolated downwards on surface of still frozen soil, creating conditions for luxuriant growth of mosses. Peat depth of three m measured in neighbourhood of Grumantbyen.
