Microtopographical thermal contrasts, northern Alaska / Frederick E. Nelson, Samuel I. Outcalt, Kenneth M. Hinkel, D.F. Murray, Barbara M. Murray.

Title: Microtopographical thermal contrasts, northern Alaska / Frederick E. Nelson, Samuel I. Outcalt, Kenneth M. Hinkel, D.F. Murray, Barbara M. Murray.
Author(s): Nelson, Frederick E.

Date: 1988.
Publisher: Trondheim: Tapir Publishers
In: Permafrost. Fifth International Conference. August 2-5, 1988. Proceedings. (1988.), Vol. 1.
Abstract: Automatic recording system was used to monitor soil temperatures at vertical intervals of 10 cm in upper 50 cm of soil at four neighbouring locations on summits of frost mounds and from surrounding marshland near Toolik Lake, AK, during winter 1984-85. Data display marked differences attributable to microtopography and presence of snow. Thermal record also reveals contrasting patterns in refreezing active layer, probably reflecting variations in coupled heat and water transfer processes.
