Calculation of the stress field in soils during freezing / M. Shen, B. Ladanyi.

Title: Calculation of the stress field in soils during freezing / M. Shen, B. Ladanyi.
Author(s): Shen, M.
Ladanyi, B.
Date: 1988.
Publisher: Rotterdam: A.A. Balkema
In: Ground freezing 88. Proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Ground Freezing, Nottingham, 28-28 July 1988. (1988.), Vol. 1.
Abstract: Presents conceptual model for calculating stresses and strains associated with soil freezing on basis of coupled heat, moisture and stress field. Takes into account non-homogeneity of freezing zone due to temperature variation as well as effects of frozen soil creep on stress distribution. Numerical simulation of saturated cylindrical sample under unidirectional freezing was carried out. Results of simulation of both temperature field and amount of heave are in good agreement with experiment. Simulation furnished complete stress field during freezing, and enabled effect of external loading on amount of frost heave to be accounted for.
