Frost heaving and frost creep on an experimental slope: results for soil structures and sorted stripes / Jean-Pierre Coutard, Brigitte Van Vliet-Lanoe, Anne-Véronique Auzet.
Title: | Frost heaving and frost creep on an experimental slope: results for soil structures and sorted stripes / Jean-Pierre Coutard, Brigitte Van Vliet-Lanoe, Anne-Véronique Auzet. |
Author(s): | Coutard, Jean-Pierre. Vliet-Lanoe, Brigitte Van. Auzet, Anne-Véronique. |
Date: | 1988. |
Abstract: | Three materials were used: loam, sandy loam, and heterogeneous material containing gravel. Slope was 12°, and subsurface water could be simulated. Maximum frost creep occurred in loamy material at lower end of slope where water supply was most intense and heaving was greater. At all points, most movement occurred just when thawing front passed them. Frost creep was shown to transform sorted polygons into sorted stripes along slope. |
Notes: | Offprint: Zeitschrift für Geomorphologie. Supplementband. Vol. 71 :13-23. Issue devoted to papers on theme "Comparative studies of active, inactive and Pleistocene periglacial phenomena" presented at 12th INQUA Congress in Ottawa, Canada, 31 July-9 August 1987. |
Keywords: | 551.343.2 -- Cryoturbation and patterned ground. 551.343.7 -- Frost, soil moisture and surface water, effect on movement of. E8 -- Glaciology: frost action and permafrost. |
