In: Sea surface sound; natural mechanisms of surface generated noise in the ocean. (1988.),
Abstract: Discusses mechanisms affecting ice-floe interactions in marginal ice zone. They are assumed to be major forcing functions driving ambient-noise levels in zone. Results from previous studies are summarized briefly with hypotheses presented concerning effect of ice eddies and grease ice on ambient noise. Data are presented from experiment held in winter 1985, in which sonobuoys were planted in water just off compact ice edge and in adjacent ice field containing two eddies. Ambient-noise levels are found to be relatively high, with significant variability over sampled region. Broad noise peak across eddy/ice-edge region suggests eddy as distributed ambient-noise source.
