Record #93913:

Acoustic ambient noise in the Arctic Ocean below the marginal ice zone / Michael J. Buckingham, Chi-fang Chen.

Title: Acoustic ambient noise in the Arctic Ocean below the marginal ice zone / Michael J. Buckingham, Chi-fang Chen.
Author(s): Buckingham, Michael J.
Chen, Chi-fang.
Date: 1988.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers
In: Sea surface sound; natural mechanisms of surface generated noise in the ocean. (1988.),
Abstract: Experimental evidence suggests that this type of noise is generated by clashing of ice floes on sea surface. Noise is spiky in character, with spectral density over frequency range from 50 Hz to 1 kHz which varies with frequency as f⁻ⁿ, where index n varies slowly with time, showing average value equal to 2. Over period of 5 days, n varied between 1.0 and 3.0. Theoretical model of marginal ice zone ambient noise is presented, based on floe/floe collision mechanism, which predicts time series and spectra whose features are broadly consistent with those observed in data.
