Record #93764:
Location of blue ice runway sites; report on air photo search / Charles W.M. Swithinbank.
Title: | Location of blue ice runway sites; report on air photo search / Charles W.M. Swithinbank. |
Author(s): | Swithinbank, Charles W. M. |
Date: | 1988. |
Publisher: | [n.p] : |
Abstract: | Lists, in descending order of proximity to South Pole, 37 sites in southern Transantarctic Mountains that appear to have smooth ice surfaces with minimal snow cover and therefore may be suitable as runways. List is based on examination of about 7000 air photographs, and it is pointed out that most of these will, in fact, prove to be unsuitable. One good place is all that is needed. |
Notes: | Unpublished report of work carried out under NSF contract for Antarctic Engineering Services (CRREL Project 88-4a) |
