Lead patterns in Arctic sea ice from remote sensing data: characteristics, controls and atmospheric interactions / Roger G. Barry, Martin W. Miles.
Title: | Lead patterns in Arctic sea ice from remote sensing data: characteristics, controls and atmospheric interactions / Roger G. Barry, Martin W. Miles. |
Author(s): | Barry, Roger G. Miles, Martin W. |
Date: | 1988. |
Publisher: | Boston, MA: American Meteorological Society |
In: | Second Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography, March 29-31, 1988, Madison, Wisc. : preprints. (1988.), |
Abstract: | Discusses results of mesoscale analysis from satellite imagery and small-scale studies from airborne lidar. Lead distributions are characterized by seasonal and interannual variability, and patterns are most affected by variability of atmospheric pressure regimes and associated ice motion. Away from coasts, geostrophic wind fields can be correlated with spatial distribution of leads. Persistence of pressure systems appears to be most important atmospheric variable influencing lead patterns. Airborne lidar data can provide detailed mapping of small leads, and enable assessment of heat and moisture fluxes from leads. |
