Record #93592:

Seasonal variations of atmospheric circulation and sea ice motion in the Arctic / Alfred S. McLaren, M.C. Serreze, Roger G. Barry.

Title: Seasonal variations of atmospheric circulation and sea ice motion in the Arctic / Alfred S. McLaren, M.C. Serreze, Roger G. Barry.
Author(s): McLaren, Alfred S.
Serreze, M. C.
Barry, Roger G.
Date: 1988.
Publisher: Boston, MA: American Meteorological Society
In: Second Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography, March 29-31, 1988, Madison, Wisc. : preprints. (1988.),
Abstract: Analysis of ice velocity data from drifting buoys in Canada Basin for 1979-85 demonstrates recurring tendency for reversal of mean clockwise gyre in late summer, apparently associated with divergent ice motion. Occurs in response to seasonal change in atmospheric forcing as anticyclonic regime is replaced by quasi-stationary low-pressure systems. Onset of cyclonic circulation shows interannual variability of one month. Reversal in 1980 was especially marked and was associated with extensive area where ice concentrations were reduced by 20-30%. Submarine sonar data collected in early August 1958 and 1970 imply that reduction is recurrent characteristic of central Beaufort Gyre.
