Record #93328:

Experimental study on distribution of brine drainage channels in sea ice / Toshiyuki Kawamura.

Title: Experimental study on distribution of brine drainage channels in sea ice / Toshiyuki Kawamura.
Author(s): Kawamura, Toshiyuki.
Date: 1988.
Publisher: [Delft]: International Association for Hydraulic Research, Committee on Ice Problems
In: Proceedings, the 9th International Symposium on Ice, 23-27 August 1988, Sapporo, Japan. (1988.), Vol. 2.
Abstract: Growth of brine drainage channels affects mechanical properties of sea ice. At low ice-growth rate, brine was drained from whole growing interface and channels were not shaped. At higher growth rates, definite channels formed on favoured grain boundaries at almost constant intervals. Channel interval tended to decrease with increasing c-axis inclination angle of adjacent grains to horizontal plane. Brine channels were formed initially at intersection of grain boundary and protrusion on ice-water interface.
