Title: A probabilistic study of ice island trajectories / Fu-cheng Li, William M. Sackinger, Ming-chi Lu, M.O. Jeffries.
Author(s): Li, Fu-cheng.
Sackinger, William M.
Lu, Ming-chi.
Jeffries, M. O.
Date: 1988.
Publisher: [Delft]: International Association for Hydraulic Research, Committee on Ice Problems
In: Proceedings, the 9th International Symposium on Ice, 23-27 August 1988, Sapporo, Japan. (1988.), Vol. 1.
Abstract: Because of small quantity of observed data, Monte Carlo method is used to obtain probability of ice-island trajectories. Based on known movement relationships of ice islands, dynamic model of movement was used. Using distribution characteristics of geostrophic wind field, random surface wind generation approach was developed. Preliminary results of computer simulation yielded contours of different return periods for ice islands in Arctic Ocean, and showed 10-year recurrence area along Beaufort Sea coast of Alaska.
