Abstract: | Presents failure criteria established from small-scale uniaxial and conventional triaxial compressive strength tests performed on samples of multi-year ice taken from floes trapped in landfast ice off coast of Banks Island, Canadian Arctic. Criteria are then used to correlate laboratory test results with results of field programme involving in-situ strength tests on multi-year ice floes using flatjacks and bore-hole jacks. At higher strain-rates, material exhibited brittle behaviour, and, at lower strain-rates, material showed ductile behaviour. Important feature of analysis is volumetric strain considerations used to characterize brittle and ductile behaviour at different strain-rates. |
