The effects of prestrain on the compressive ductile-to-brittle transition in ice / G.A. Kuehn, E.M. Schulson, W.A. Nixon.
Title: | The effects of prestrain on the compressive ductile-to-brittle transition in ice / G.A. Kuehn, E.M. Schulson, W.A. Nixon. |
Author(s): | Kuehn, G. A. Schulson, E. M. Nixon, W. A. |
Date: | 1988. |
Publisher: | [Delft]: International Association for Hydraulic Research, Committee on Ice Problems |
In: | Proceedings, the 9th International Symposium on Ice, 23-27 August 1988, Sapporo, Japan. (1988.), Vol. 1. |
Abstract: | Pre-strain under conditions where ice is ductile raises strain-rate at which material undergoes transition, e.g. strain-rate for columnar saline ice at -10°C compressed along columns is increased from one to two orders of magnitude upon prestraining. When prestrained same amount by compressing in direction normal to column, strain-rate is increased by one order of magnitude. Correspondingly, strength is generally reduced. Effects are attributed to changes within internal structure of ice caused by prestrain. |
