Nearshore marine environments of the Alaska Beaufort Sea during deposition of the Flaxman Member of the Gubik Formation / L. David Carter, Elisabeth M. Brouwers, Louie Marincovich, Jr.

Title: Nearshore marine environments of the Alaska Beaufort Sea during deposition of the Flaxman Member of the Gubik Formation / L. David Carter, Elisabeth M. Brouwers, Louie Marincovich, Jr.

Abstract: Describes this glaciomarine mud, several metres thick, which occurs along coast of this part of northern Alaska and inland to altitudes of 7 m. Deposition took place during Early Wisconsin (Simpsonian transgression). Presents faunal data from Flaxman Member which suggest that, at water depths of 20 m and less, seasonal fluctuations of salinity and temperature were probably similar to present regime, but that water temperatures may have been warmer. At some localities east of Flaxman Island, however, salinities were less than modern values for comparable environments, and this is interpreted as indicating higher influx of fresh water into marine environment by melt water from abundant icebergs and ablating ice sheet.
