Mass-balance studies of ice streams A, B, and C, west Antarctica, and possible surging behavior of Ice Stream B / Sion Shabtaie, Charles R. Bentley, Robert A. Bindschadler, Douglas R. MacAyeal.
Title: | Mass-balance studies of ice streams A, B, and C, west Antarctica, and possible surging behavior of Ice Stream B / Sion Shabtaie, Charles R. Bentley, Robert A. Bindschadler, Douglas R. MacAyeal. |

Abstract: | In previous work, it was shown that ice streams A and B have negative mass balances, whereas inactive C has strongly positive balance. Here, balances of A and B are examined more closely by constructing several gates across them where velocities and ice thicknesses have been measured. Net fluxes in blocks of ice streams delimited by successive pairs of gates are then examined. A appears to be discharging more ice than is being accumulated, and is thinning. B is more complex because of behaviour of tributaries B1 and B2: overall pattern appears to be slight thinning in catchment, intense thinning in girdle, and thickening in main body, which decreases with distance from girdle. Could be due to surge or some other dynamic change. C is thickening over entire area. |
