Record #92462:

Characteristic growth processes of ice crystals on the Antarctic ice sheet / Hiroshi Nishimura, Norikazu Maeno.

Title: Characteristic growth processes of ice crystals on the Antarctic ice sheet / Hiroshi Nishimura, Norikazu Maeno.
Author(s): Nishimura, Hiroshi.

Publisher: Cambridge: International Glaciological Society
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1988.), Vol. 11 (1988)
Abstract: Crystal size in snow was measured in 30 m snow cores drilled at four sites on Mizuho Plateau, and regional differences were examined with special reference to temperature-gradient layer. Growth rate of crystals in temperature-gradient layer above 6 m was much larger than that in isothermal layer below 10 m. However, apparent activation energy was much smaller in temperature-gradient layer. Using temperature profiles in snow that were estimated from meteorological data from several stations, growth rates in temperature-gradient layer were calculated. Calculated temperature dependence of growth rates, taking into consideration vertical flux of water vapour between ice particles caused by temperature gradient, showed good agreement with measured results. Concludes that growth process in layer above 6 m is mainly due to vapour transport under vertical temperature gradient.
