Record #92455:

Numerical models of steady-state thickness and basal ice configurations of the central Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica / Manfred A. Lange, Douglas R. MacAyeal.

Title: Numerical models of steady-state thickness and basal ice configurations of the central Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica / Manfred A. Lange, Douglas R. MacAyeal.
Author(s): Lange, Manfred A.
MacAyeal, Douglas R.
Date: 1988.
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1988.), Vol. 11 (1988)
Abstract: Earlier radar surveys and bore-hole measurements suggested existence of lobe-shaped basal layer of undetermined nature characterized by high radio-wave absorptivity and by thicknesses up to 300 m. This basal layer and associated ice-shelf thickness and flow distributions are reconstructed using time-dependent ice-shelf model forced with prescribed basal freezing rates. Characteristics of basal layer are controlled by two factors: long ice-column residence times in unventilated pocket between Henry and Korff ice rises and Doake Ice Rumples, and basal freezing rates in pocket that exceed snow-accumulation rate (currently averaging 0.35 m a⁻¹ ice equivalent across ice shelf)
