Record #92421:
Occurrence and potential significance of warm weather during winter in the eastern Canadian Arctic / Robert Gilbert, Cheryl McKenna Neuman.
Title: | Occurrence and potential significance of warm weather during winter in the eastern Canadian Arctic / Robert Gilbert, Cheryl McKenna Neuman. |
Author(s): | Gilbert, Robert. McKenna Neuman, Cheryl. |
Date: | 1988. |
In: | Arctic and Alpine Research. (1988.), Vol. 20(4) (1988) |
Abstract: | Daily photographs from automatic camera show event of snowmelt and flooding of Weasel River sandur on Baffin Island on 10 January 1985. During this, strong winds and low humidity accompanied rise in air temperature to -1°C at Pangnirtung, 40 km south. Many other similar events were recorded during winter in this area. Severe winter cyclones migrating up Davis Strait-Baffin Bay low-pressure trough are principal cause, augmented by orographic effects. Melting of thin and discontinuous snow cover is probably associated with these events; this may influence characteristics of snowpack on refreezing, nature of freeze-thaw weathering, and formation of icings on Arctic streams. |
