Record #91932:

Measurement and interpretation of electrical freezing potential of soils / Dennis J. Kelsh, Susan Taylor.

Title: Measurement and interpretation of electrical freezing potential of soils / Dennis J. Kelsh, Susan Taylor.
Author(s): Kelsh, Dennis J.
Taylor, Susan.
Date: 1988.
Publisher: Hanover, NH: US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory
In: CRREL Report. (1988.), Vol. 88-10 (1988)
Abstract: Shows that electrical potential changes of same order of magnitude as freezing potentials (i.e. about 100 mV) can be generated by simply compressing soil at room temperature. This suggests that significant and previously unrecognized source of electrical freezing potential could be due to pressure induced during frost heaving. Because many interrelated variables are responsible for electrical freezing potential, use of freezing potential to predict corrosivity, water migration, or other physical properties of freezing soils is considered to be inappropriate.
