Record #91335:

Friction of ice / M. Beeman, W.B. Durham, S.H. Kirby.

Title: Friction of ice / M. Beeman, W.B. Durham, S.H. Kirby.
Author(s): Beeman, M.
Durham, W. B.
Kirby, S. H.
Date: 1988.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1988.), Vol. 93(B7) (1988)
Abstract: Describes application of sliding on inclined "sawcut" surface through cylindrical sample using triaxial testing apparatus, as used in frictional sliding experiments in rock mechanics laboratories, to pure polycrystalline water ice. Also extended application to Jupiter's three large icy moons, Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa, where water ice is dominant constituent. Images returned by Voyager spacecraft indicate that brittle processes have played important part in evolution of surface of these moons.
