Observations on the roles of snow and ice on the chemistry of an Arctic lake / Craig Allen.
Title: | Observations on the roles of snow and ice on the chemistry of an Arctic lake / Craig Allen. |
Author(s): | Allen, Craig. |
Date: | 1987. |
In: | Eastern Snow Conference. Proceedings. (1987.), Vol. 43rd [1986] Annual Meeting (1987) |
Abstract: | Spring snowmelt period (May-June 1983-85) was studied for naturally acidified (pH 3.8) Colour Lake, Axel Heiberg Island. Snow melt-water was significantly more dilute and alkaline than late-winter water. Chemical differences between water masses were used to trace melt-water pathways through lake system and determine influence of snow and ice meltwater runoff on lake each spring. Water below ice was not diluted from addition of snowmelt water but did become distinctly less acidic from other causes. |
