| Abstract: | Positive mass balance in three of four years between 1970 and 1974; since then, glacier has been snow-covered throughout ablation seasons, ice having been exposed only at steepest section. In early 1970s, surface velocity at lower end of glacier's upper basin decreased down-glacier from 9 to 2 m a⁻¹ in distance of 200 m. Velocities over lower glacier were <0.5 m a⁻¹. Re-survey of surviving stakes in 1985 revealed that surface velocities on lower glacier had averaged <0.1 m a⁻¹ in preceding 15 years and that changes of thickness were equivalent to specific net mass-balance values at sites, indicating that ice deformation since 1970 had been negligible. |
