Abstract: Gross β-activity of snow samples from vertical profiles on four Austrian Alpine glaciers was measured with respect to their contamination from fallout after this event on 26 April 1986. Mean values of activity concentration of Chernobyl layer in various profiles calculated for each glacier are between 55 and 128 Bq kg⁻¹ (August-December 1986). Same order of magnitude as contamination of firn in 1963 following atmospheric nuclear weapons tests. γ-spectrum analysis shows that no fractionation of isotope mixture occurs due to isotope displacement into deeper layers.
