Validation and quantitative assessment of the deterioration mechanisms of Arctic icebergs / Mona El-Tahan, S. Venkatesh, H. El-Tahan.
Title: | Validation and quantitative assessment of the deterioration mechanisms of Arctic icebergs / Mona El-Tahan, S. Venkatesh, H. El-Tahan. |
Author(s): | El-Tahan, Mona. Venkatesh, S. El-Tahan, H. |
Date: | 1987. |
In: | Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering. (1987.), Vol. 109(1) (1987) |
Abstract: | Model simulations of deterioration of three icebergs in Grand Banks-Labrador Sea area are compared with observations. Best results obtained where detailed observations of above- and under-water portions of icebergs are available. Quantitative assessment of deterioration carried out for each month when sea-surface temperature was above 0°C. Wave erosion found to be major mechanism of deterioration as it also causes calving of overhanging slabs. |
Notes: | Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering. Vol. 109(1) :102-108 (1987). |
Keywords: | 551.32 -- Glaciology. 551.326 -- Floating ice. 551.326.6 -- Icebergs. E6 -- Glaciology: floating ice. |
