Abstract: Measurements of meltwater pH from annual layers of South Pole firn and ice show that precipitation at this site has higher natural acidity than expected. Can be accounted for by SO₄²⁻ and NO₃⁻ originating from non-anthropogenic H₂SO₄ and HNO₃. Value of 5.4 is considered more representative baseline reference pH for acid precipitation studies, instead of hitherto presumed 5.65.
