Moving loads on sea ice / Vernon A. Squire, Patricia J. Langhorne, William H. Robinson, Arnold J. Heine, T.G. Haskell.
Title: | Moving loads on sea ice / Vernon A. Squire, Patricia J. Langhorne, William H. Robinson, Arnold J. Heine, T.G. Haskell. |
Author(s): | Squire, Vernon A. Langhorne, Patricia J. Robinson, William H. Heine, Arnold J. Haskell, T. G. |
Date: | 1987. |
In: | Polar Record. (1987.), Vol. 23(146) (1987) |
Abstract: | Load moving on sea ice produces deflection which can cause ice failure. Magnitude and shape of deflection profile depends on weight and speed of load, and also on ice thickness and properties, with flexural-gravity waves radiating from source at critical speeds. This wave pattern was studied on flat snow-free sea ice in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Surface strain was measured directly and microcracking activity monitored to correlate strain with cracking. Speeds of 28 m s⁻¹ were achieved with land vehicle and of 80 m s⁻¹ with aircraft. |
