Abstract: Presents observations, made in tunnel at base of sub-polar Urumqi Glacier No. 1, China, on three new mechanisms of glacier flow, which, individually or in combination, account for nearly all overall glacier motion, but act only within lowermost 1 to 2% of effective glacier thickness. Ice-laden drift has effective viscosity 100 times less than that of overlying ice, thus allowing rapid shear deformation.
