Record #84588:

Long-term climatic changes indicated by crystal growth in polar ice / J.R. Petit, Paul Duval, Claude Lorius.

Title: Long-term climatic changes indicated by crystal growth in polar ice / J.R. Petit, Paul Duval, Claude Lorius.
Author(s): Petit, J. R.
Duval, Paul.
Lorius, Claude.
Date: 1987.
In: Nature. (1987.), Vol. 326(6108) (1987)
Abstract: Proposes reconstruction of palaeotemperatures from polar ice samples by using profiles of changes in crystal size. From data obtained from ice cores from Dome Circe and Vostok, central Antarctica, it is suggested that rate of crystal growth is driven by built-in "memory" of surface temperature conditions at time of deposition. Proposes semi-empirical model of crystal-grain growth, leading to estimates of temperature changes at last glacial maximum-Holocene in good agreement with isotope interpretations.
