Abstract: Article describes two ways in which East Greenlanders impressed false identities onto new-born children: perpetuation of dead ancestor, usually grandparent, and taking-on nature of member of opposite sex, usually much-wanted boy or recently defunct child. Latter causes confusion to teachers, as well as to child; author has met about thirty cases of "renaming" in population of 2400.
