Abstract: Outlines advantages of ice cores from Transantarctic Mountains as records of glacial history, climatic change, and atmospheric history, and describes field programme of 1985-86 summer, which included development of ice-drainage map for study region, radio echo-sounding of drill site, surface and detailed snowpit sampling (6 and 1 to 2 m), and collection and on-site examination of 201 m core.
