Abstract: Points out that deformation of sea ice may be described by theory of turbulence. Presents statistical description of relative motion of pairs of ice particles, with emphasis on how statistics depend on time interval over which motion occurs and on separation. Mean squared change in separation is shown to depend on separation raised to positive power between 1 and 2. This empirical result is based on observations from Bering and Beaufort seas.
