Record #82073:

Ice lensing in layered soils / Edward Penner.

Title: Ice lensing in layered soils / Edward Penner.
Author(s): Penner, Edward.
Date: 1986.
In: Canadian Geotechnical Journal. (1986.), Vol. 23(3) (1986)
Abstract: Soil samples of alternating silt and clay layers were prepared for laboratory study of ice lens formation in layered soil, simulating ice growth in varved soils. Under limiting conditions of this experimental study, ice lenses formed at face of fine-textured (clay) layer when it was encountered by freezing plane. Only minor heaving occurred in coarse-textured (silt) layer when its thickness was increased.
Notes:

Canadian Geotechnical Journal. Vol. 23(3) :334-340 (1986).

Keywords: 551.345.3 -- Permafrost, composition and structure. Ice wedges.
551.345.2 -- Permafrost, formation and decay.
E8 -- Glaciology: frost action and permafrost.
