Abstract: Vertical face indenter pushed into floating S₂ columnar-grained ice at 0°C and average speeds corresponding to nominal strain-rates of 10⁻² s⁻¹. Ratios of indenter width to ice thickness ranged from 0.5 to 50. Failure modes determined and indentation coefficient measured. Results compared with existing theories for ranges of ductile, transitory and brittle failure of ice. Makes recommendations for indentation coefficients to use for various aspect ratios in columnar-grained ice for each failure mode.
