Abstract: To increase load-carrying capacity of floating ice, three types of low-cost reinforcement were studied: sand, birch branches and sawn timber. Tests on lake in northern Sweden in winter 1985-86 showed that birch branches had no effect, whereas in cases of sand and timber much depended on characteristics of ice.
