Record #79803:

Antarctic iceberg distribution and dissolution / T.C. Hamley, William F. Budd.

Title: Antarctic iceberg distribution and dissolution / T.C. Hamley, William F. Budd.
Author(s): Hamley, T. C.
Budd, William F.
Date: 1986.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (1986.), Vol. 32(111) (1986)
Abstract: Based on shipboard observations over period of six years in Southern Ocean between 60 and 140°E. "Median life" (before breaking) of icebergs less than 1000 m long estimated to be 0.2 a, and mean melt rate estimated to be 0.12 m d⁻¹. Relative contributions of melt, calving, and breakage, plus enhancement effect of roll-over, are examined in estimating natural dissolution rate. Dominant mechanism for large icebergs is breakage; melt and calving explain disappearance of small icebergs only.
