Abstract: Analysis of ice cores from near top of High Arctic ice caps shows that Franklin era (1845-59) was culmination of 50-year period of consistently unfavourable summers. Compared with modern (1941-70) normals, era appears to have been one of the least favourable periods in past 700 years.
